General information about OEKO-TEX®
Basic document of the international certification in the OEKO-TEX® system is STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® in which product classes with limit concentrations of harmful substances are defined.
Since 2018 the standard is further specified according to the appendixes, so called Appendix 4 and Appendix 6, whereby Appendix 6 of the STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® involves global campaign of GREENPEACE organisation known as “DETOX TO ZERO”.
Since 2017 the OEKO-TEX® system of product certification was extended by testing and certification of leather and leather products in all stages of manufacture to ensure that the leather products do not contain harmful substances. Testing and certification of leather products is performed according to LEATHER STANDARD by OEKO-TEX®, which is also specified according to the appendixes, Appendix 4 and Appendix 6, where limit concentrations in four product classes (product class I, II, III, IV) are presented.
Testing and certification in the OEKO-TEX® system
The STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® covers not only chemical substances, banned or regulated by the legislation, but also other substances, which are harmful to health according to the present scientific knowledge. Therefore, a large number of tests must be performed on certification of textile and clothing products in the OEKO-TEX® system; more than 100 harmful substances are examined in several cases. Costs of the tests depend directly on number of performed analyses on the specific products and prices, indicated in the uniform price list of the OEKO-TEX® Association.
The certification costs include licence fee on the base of which holder of the OEKO-TEX® certificate obtains a generated certificate number and own QR code which is a part of the issued certificate.
Validity of the OEKO-TEX® certificate is 1 year and the manufacturers must ask repeatedly for the tests of their products before the end of the period of validity of the certificate, so that continuous validity of the certificate as well as continuous listing in the OEKO-TEX® central register for certified products could be ensured.
Products certified in the OEKO-TEX® system
In general, all textile products in every stage of their processing can be certified according to the STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®, from threads to finished textiles and finished products.
We test each separate component before the final product may bear the OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 marking. Threads, buttons, zip fasteners and linings are involved.
All parts of a product including prints and coatings of the outer material are tested for harmful substances according to the criteria, applied to them, whether they are children textiles, clothing, home textiles or decorative materials. The OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 label indicates confidence in the product.
OEKO-TEX® marking of products
If a product is marked with the OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 label, you can be sure that each component of this product, i.e. every fibre, button and other components were tested for harmful substances and therefore the product is not harmful for a man from ecological viewpoint. The tests are performed by independent OEKO-TEX® institutes on the base of the STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®. Numerous regulated and non-regulated substances, which can be harmful to human health are taken into account during the tests. Limit values of the STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® exceed national as well as international requirements in many cases. Criteria of the STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® are updated at least once a year and adapted the latest scientific knowledge or legislative requirements.
It is not easy for the manufacturers and customers to have an overview of legislative requirements and conditions concerning harmful substances every day, OEKO-TEX® makes it instead of you.
